Safety

OVERVIEW

Safety is a crucial aspect of construction — safety of our employees, the general public, the environment, and the interests of our clients. We recognize the important roles training, responsibility, and open communication play in creating and maintaining a healthy and safe work environment for everyone.

The health and safety of our employees is of paramount importance to Blakeslee Arpaia Chapman. Meticulous consideration of safety and health, during both planning and execution stages, is considered a vital part of every operation.

A formal safety program is managed by the director of safety, who works closely with project superintendents and foremen. In turn, each superintendent and foreman is responsible for understanding, implementing, and communicating the formal safety program to the rest of the crew. Formal training sessions are held to discuss new rules and regulations and to review safe practices. Topics such as preventing occupationally induced injuries are discussed and an exercise program has been implemented for field personnel, with the intent of reducing injuries.

BAC trains employees to be prepared for what can occur on a jobsite. Company policy is for daily tailboard talks with crews, as well as periodic chiropractor visits to jobsites, and random drug and alcohol tests. Our goal is zero accidents and injuries. We are proud to say that we have accomplished our annual goal of zero lost time accidents several times. We continue to strive for improved safety performance and anticipate many more years of meeting this goal in the future.

Recent OSHA training classes include Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, Sexual Harassment, Trenching & Shoring. Many employees have training in Air & Power Tools, Concrete, Crane Signals, Excavation, Hoisting & Rigging, Lockout/Tagout, Pile Driving, Pipe Laying, Scaffolds, Welding/Grinding, and Hot Work, Supervisor Drug & Alcohol Training, Electrical Safe Practices for the Non-Utility Worker, Diving Operations, Driver Training, Substance Abuse Compliance Supervisor Training, 40-hour Hazwoper Training, Barge Operations, Radar Operations, Respirator Use, Aerial Lift Operator, Human Performance/Error Elimination Training for Contractors, First Aid/ CPR/AED, Soft Tissue Injury Prevention & Wellness, OSHA 10, OSHA 30, Asbestos Awareness, Lead Awareness, Bloodborne Pathogens. Mobil Crane Safety, Indoor Crane Safety, Forklift Operator, OSHA 1910.296 NESC-NFPA 70E Electrical Safe Work Practices.

All of this training is reinforced with presentations made at Foremen's Club dinners. Rewards are given to employees who point out potential hazards as encouragement to keep workers aware of their surroundings and cognizant of conditions that could lead to problems. In the Foreman's Incentive Program, the foreman receives a cash bonus for no lost crew time.

FOREMAN’S CLUB

The BAC Foreman's Club is comprised of foremen, supervisors, and office personnel. In the 1920s, long before OSHA existed, this unique organization was started by company foremen to share concerns about safety and promote better construction practices. Its purpose is to review and oversee the safety program created by BAC. The Club is effective in communicating information on safety and occupational health issues. Dinner meetings are held periodically, during which invited speakers present topics in their areas of expertise. Subjects covered at these meetings include trenching and excavation, first aid/CPR/AED, hazardous materials handling, fall protection, respirators, scaffolding, repetitive motion injuries, and electrical hazards.

Within the Foreman's Club is the voluntary Safety Committee. At their monthly meetings, the group discusses near-misses and proposes alternate construction methods to avoid injury and illness. Decisions are made in a timely manner and are enforced through our corporate HASP.
