Adm. Harold E. Shear
State Pier Complex

New London, CT

The scope of work included the demolition and replacement of the west side of the State Pier, an 1100' by 70' commercial pier in New London Harbor. The work included riprap and rock walls, placing large broken stone on earth surfaces for protection against the action of water, erosion protection, harbor structures, roadway systems, underwater construction, underwater utilities, pile driving and extraction, repair and demolition of piers, bulkheads, reinforced concrete, precast concrete, fender systems, mechanical work, electrical work, brick paving, waterproofing, cathodic protection work and sitework. The new cast-in-place concrete deck is supported by a network of 337 steel piles, each pile is 18 inches in diameter and 140 feet long. The piles were driven through 8 to 15 feet of riprap and had a 3 inch tolerance for alignment at the cut-off elevation.

The location of the project was challenging as it was a very busy area surrounded by ferry terminals, highway, rail lines, industrial developments, private watercraft, and our staging area was very limited.
